Focus Group:

Ø     What do you like best about the Dining Hall:

o       B: Likes purified water – the different water options. Satisfied with the sandwiches and deli. Likes all the options

o       V: I like the salad and pasta bars. Chicken is my favorite. Loves the unlimited swipes

o       S: The idea of access outside of traditional meal times (everyone agreed)

o       C: Gives my friends and me a break and allows us to sit together in a nice atmosphere. It is nice. I like the salad bar. I like the Cabaret look. I like the large tables in the Dining Hall for lots of friends. As far as I can judge, the seating is fine.

o       V: I would love the cabaret type seating in the Dining Hall.

o       B: The black tables allow me to see crumbs so that I can wipe the table if I need to. I like the round tables.

o       V: I love the round tables

o       C: I don’t like the round tables because of the distance.

o       V: I like about 8 people at my table.

o       S: Do people join you or pass by tables?

o       B: Sometimes it happens. I usually sit and meet people.

o       V: Huge tables are inviting for more people to sit down, but I know everyone’s not like that.

o       B/V/C: Likes the ideas of Cocktail/high seating and high tables.

o       B: I like the idea of different variations of table s to get through.

o       C: I like cocktail seating in Jazzman’s.

o       B/V/C: Counter surface against the windows to encourage me to come in alone and do homework.

o       B: Carpeting is nice but harder to maintain.

o       V: Counters for individuals eating alone. I can’t see myself doing work here. Make a relaxed/work area type place.

o       C: My sister’s Dining Hall has an area for intimate dining and studying.

o       B: Don’t like sitting in the L (Siberia). I like being in the main part where all the people are.

Ø     Idea of TV/technology in the dining hall:

o       B: Depends on what is on the TV. People would stay here all the time to watch the games. Sometimes we get so engrossed in technology that we don’t speak and commune with each other like we should. The Dining Hall should be an area to break bread and have conversations.

o       C: I think it’s nice but it would be out of place

o       B: I wouldn’t have a problem with the Marist Channel (Valerie agrees)

o       A: If we add technology, its more conducive to programming. If flat screens are purchased, one can be on the Marist channel and the other can be on CNN for news. Almost an airport/like information experience. Marist lacks community seems to lack information. No one at Marist seems to know what’s going on in the world.

Ø     Late Night options – What does that mean?

o       C: I would go to the Cabaret of Jazzman’s

o       Late night dining should be drinks, pizza, bagels, and snack-type foods. A few substantial options for those who had class during dinner. Late night – 8:00-10:30/11 PM and 11:00-12:00 am for just drinks.

o       V: I would come to eat.

o       B: The weekend food is very limited. I come in here and I’m disappointed.

o       V: I find myself staying out of the Dining Hall on the weekends.

o       B: I wish there were healthier options. Like the meat…(negative sighs), but it doesn’t taste healthy.

o       C: I don’t think upper classmen will come here at night because they have cars, etc, and they eat across the street and on their way home from their internships.

o       A: I think it will be better.

Ø     What type of structure is best for the Dining Hall:

o       I think 2 meal/week is ideal for upper classmen. A la carte 200 + 2 meals/week is a great idea.

o       S: Maybe an interest in 5 meals/week

o       C: I think the 2 meals is ideal

o       A: I think they’ll be interested in the Grab-n-go in Donnelly and Dyson and use your meal swipe to get it from other locations.

o       A/V/B/C: They agree

o       B: People don’t know about the grab and go and they take plates and utensil.

o       S: Portability and awareness of the grab and go. Have some sandwiches and sushi a part of the meal plan.

Ø     What types of food would you like to see?

o       A: Chinese/Asian Cuisine station

o       C: Nacho Bar

o       A:  Maybe M/W/F Asian, T/Th Latin America. Can break stations to different things.

o       B: I like shrimp!
